FARM GIRL EDIBLES
Yes, that’s a picture of green beans. What does green beans have to do with Farm Girl Edibles? That’s what our founder remembers picking while growing up in the San Luis Obispo area in California. Summers were not much of a fond memory because it meant work, taking vacations, like her friends, wasn’t ever discussed! Don’t feel sorry for her, she did get paid, a whooping penny a pound as an incentive! Grant it, a penny bought something then. As soon as she could head off to college, she did! Although, even while attending the local university, her family sold at the local Farmer’s Markets where she still had to help work! Not wanting anything to do with the “farm” after graduating from college, she left the coast of San Luis Obispo and moved throughout Northern and Southern California.
Years later, as a home owner, she still enjoyed having a garden with fruit trees or fresh vegetables, because to her, fresh produce is what she knew and still loves the fresh taste. While at a craft boutique, a vendor was selling homemade jams and jellies. This brought back memories for her since farming always provided an abundance of berries and fruits where she taught herself how to make pies and preserves. As the vendor offered her samples, the taste wasn’t the same as she remembered and knew she had to make her creations to offer better tasting products! Ironically, that’s how it all began, by returning to her roots!
Going back and selling her creations at the local Farmer’s Markets was a great start. The interaction with customers wanting certain flavors was enough feedback to create unique flavors with jalapeños and wine. Currently, the jalapeño flavors are the hot sellers! All the jellies can be used to cook with and Farm Girl Edibles offers recipes too! Crackel, the un-brittle, is our peanut candy, originally made for gifts, but as the recipe became perfected, it just made sense to offer this light, and airy candy too. Crackel may look like peanut brittle, but it isn’t like traditional brittle, it’s not hard, sticky or a tooth breaker, so we decided to name it Crackel as this melt in your mouth candy is very addictive! We hope you enjoy her story, but more importantly, our unique line of custom jellies and Crackel candy.
Flo Mina grew up as a farm girl! Learning a work ethic the hard way with long days in the field, which just wasn't her fun as a kid. Her way of getting out of field work was to go in and cook meals or snacks. Being in the kitchen and learning to cook meals for the family became her passion.
One season, a bumper crop of berries, had her teaching herself how to make pies, jam and jelly.
After college she moved throughout the state of California, and raised a family in Southern California. At her children's school fundraiser, a vendor selling homemade jams and jellies there changed her life. When she tasted it, the quality wasn't how she remembered and decided people needed to taste a product similar to what she was raised with, so creating her own jellies and jams began!
She loves making combination flavors and perfected a few unique flavors that are used to cook great tasting meals too. Check out the RECIPES section for some yummy and quick ideas. If you'd like more recipes, purchase her own eCookbook. She still uses the garden grown raspberries from her backyard!
At Farm Girl Edibles we love cooking with our jellies and jams, almost on a daily basis, especially on meats as a glaze or even as a salad dressing!
